ADAS and How It Affects Me

Posted on July 5, 2024

Why do windshields for my new car cost so much more than they used to? What’s up with all this new technology on my windshield? What is ADAS.

Welcome To The 21st Century Automobile.

In an effort to outdo themselves in the pursuit of the driverless car, the auto manufacturers are falling all over each other to incorporate the new technology needed for such a vehicle. They are adding many highly specialized safety features to most of their current and new vehicle models and some of these are mounted to the windshield. Others are located in the grill, the bumpers, the mirrors and basically anywhere they can put them. These ADAS features (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) incorporate Radar, LIDAR, ultrasonic waves and an array of cameras to give the vehicle and the driver a complete “view” of their surroundings.

Below Are Some Of The Features That ADAS Provide.

  • Forward collision warning
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane departure warning
  • Lane keeping assist
  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Rear cross traffic alert
  • Parking assist/self-parking
  • Adaptive headlights that steer with the vehicle
  • Automatic headlight high-beam activation and dimming

So What Does That Mean For The Consumer?

Some of these fancy gadgets are mounted on the windshield and must be removed and re-installed on the new replacement. More importantly, these devices can be very sensitive and require RECALIBRATION to ensure they are working properly. This has little to do with the glass installation per se, but the devices, if not calibrated when required, can affect the performance of these safety features.

Modern windshield replacement is not as simple, convenient or as reasonably priced as it once was. While mobile windshield replacement is still a viable option, re-calibration often has to be completed in-house by a qualified shop (Glass On The Move) which is a cost separate from the installation and adds to the time you are without your vehicle.

The good news is that the insurance industry has recognized this as a necessity and will pay the added cost. Contact Glass On The Move for more information or to schedule an appointment. We will help walk you through it. Because that’s what we do.
